Cyberpunk 2077 Edgerunners 2 Update arrives October 22 with mods and new quest

Update 2.5 brings a prequel quest to the anime, dual-wielding and console mods on October 22. The game is 70% off at $17.99 until October 26.

CD PROJEKT RED has published the patch notes for the Edgerunners 2 Update (2.5) of Cyberpunk 2077 one day ahead of release: the free update goes live on October 22. At the same time, the game is 70 percent off on Steam until October 26, at $17.99 instead of $59.99.

The developer's press release ties the update to the Netflix premiere of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 and says it features content inspired by the anime. According to Gematsu, the update was detailed by CD Projekt RED together with co-development partner Virtuos. The studio is also showing it on a REDstreams broadcast on October 21 at 5 PM CEST.

What the update adds

The Steam post of October 21 leads with a new side quest, Clampdown, set before the events of Edgerunners 2. It unlocks after completing The Heist and two gigs for Wakako. GamesRadar+ reports that it follows the last job of Weak Kingsley's team and uses voice actors from the show. The quest rewards a 5-piece gear set based on King, and a new radio station, HKGN 102.0 FM, plays tracks from the series, 16 songs from both seasons according to GamesRadar+.

The main gameplay addition is the Double Trouble perk in the Cool tree, which with four auxiliary perks lets V dual-wield Pistols and Revolvers from the Power category. GamesRadar+ says weapon bonuses carry over to dual-wield mode, with some form of downside the developers did not detail. PC Gamer points out that until now, even Jackie Welles' dual pistols become a single-handed weapon once you pick them up.

V's look gets attention too. Mantis Blades, Gorilla Arms, Monowire and the Projectile Launch System can be restyled at five Glamdocs, which GamesRadar+ says offer 40 new looks. Five new outfit sets are now on sale at clothing vendors, with one more set to follow later. Gematsu, reprinting the full notes, adds another side quest with a guided tour of Night City narrated by Richard Night, 12 new Minor Arcana Tarot Cards tied to an extension of "Fool on the Hill", and saves grouped by playthrough in the load menu.

The update also adds cross-platform mod support through mod.io, browsable from the in-game menu on PC, Mac, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 5 Pro and Xbox Series X|S, with more mods to come. GamesRadar+ quotes Paweł Sasko that the menu will be "including the adult mods." Kotaku reports the studio warns that installing too many at once might "destabilize" the game. Whether Switch 2 gets mods is unclear: GamesRadar+ lists it, Notebookcheck says it isn't supported yet.

Players and press

On Steam the game is climbing. On October 20 it ranked 30th in the most played chart with a peak of 55,678 players, up from 39th a week earlier. On October 21 at 16:41 UTC, 57,002 people were playing, with a daily peak of 65,096. It also sits 5th in the German store's top sellers. Of 989,654 user reviews, 87 percent are positive, rated Very Positive.

The features were known early: Kotaku reports that YouTuber Was Nemo accidentally published pre-briefed coverage ahead of time. Kotaku's writer did not care much for the new season, but notes that the first one had a real hand in rehabilitating the game's image after its rocky 2020 launch. GameSpot reported that the first series pushed sales to 20 million units.

For anyone starting out or returning, the timing works: the discount runs until October 26 and the update is free. Clampdown requires progress past The Heist, so new players will not reach it right away. According to Gematsu, version 2.5 is not coming to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, and GamePro reports that the Switch 2 and Mac App Store versions follow in the coming days.
