Apparent gameplay clips and a claimed map are spreading online while Take-Two loses billions in implied market value. The timing is clear, but causation is not.

It sounds like the perfect disaster headline: new GTA 6 leaks, billions lost, stock-market crash. The real picture is less simple.
Since August 18, a new wave of apparently unreleased Grand Theft Auto VI material has spread across multiple platforms. Reports describe several gameplay videos and an alleged map. IGN counted four videos within roughly 24 hours by August 20. At that point, neither Rockstar Games nor parent company Take-Two had publicly confirmed the material's authenticity or explained where it came from.
Rockstar is reportedly issuing takedown requests against uploads. That shows the company wants the material removed, but it does not independently prove that every circulating file is authentic, current, or complete. The campaign also promotes a cryptocurrency and carries demands aimed at game publishers, another reason to avoid unofficial sites and downloads.
Best of Games does not host or link the unauthorized material. We use only official Rockstar imagery.
Take-Two shares fell sharply during the same period. Insider Gaming cited an intraday move from $248.13 on August 18 to $232.84 less than two days later. The implied drop in market capitalization was estimated at about $2.83 billion. GameSpot also reported a move from roughly $245 at the start of the week to around $236 during trading on August 20.
That $2.83 billion was not cash leaving Take-Two's bank account. It describes a temporary change in the company's implied market value between two share prices. The wider stock market did not crash. One company's shares came under pressure.
The timing is notable, but there is no proof that the leaks caused the entire move. Take-Two had already reported on August 7 that quarterly Net Bookings fell three percent year over year to $1.39 billion, alongside a GAAP net loss of $34.1 million. The company still maintained its full-year Net Bookings outlook of $8.0 billion to $8.2 billion.
Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled to launch on November 19, 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar has also announced an official extended presentation for August 27.
Until Rockstar or Take-Two addresses this leak wave directly, the circulating material remains unconfirmed. Players who want to arrive in Leonida without spoilers should avoid reposts and alleged complete collections.
