Flotsam Review – A Cozy Floating City-Builder with Rough Edges
I sunk hours into Flotsam’s charming world: scavenging ocean junk, growing a raft-town and rescuing quirky drifters. Beautiful art and a relaxed loop, but mid/late-game pacing, bugs and QoL issues sometimes grind the joy to a halt.
Flotsam turns ocean garbage into a surprisingly heartwarming city-building loop. Think RimWorld/Oxygen Not Included vibes crossed with Raft’s ocean travel — but with a calmer, more decorative charm and a few rough patches that show its indie roots.

You steer a growing flotilla around a flooded world, scavenging plastics, driftwood and tech to expand homes, workshops and tiny gardens. Core gameplay is resource gathering → crafting → building → explore, with specialists (Birdkeeper, Chemist, Electrician) unlocking tech and quests. There’s a satisfying production chain feeling when you set up desalination, food and power, and decorating the town actually makes it feel alive — especially if you’re a sucker for cute seagulls. The game leans cozy rather than brutal: no combat, but pollution, sickness and tight water/food budgets create meaningful pressure. Where it trips up is pacing and polish: mid- to late-game can feel repetitive, automation/QoL is limited, and a handful of bugs (pathing, freezes, FPS/VSync quirks) still surface for some players. Despite that, the art, music and animations sell the mood; watching drifters shuffle about is oddly therapeutic. If you like wandering-hoarder sims like Wandering Village or Airborne Kingdom, Flotsam scratches a similar itch with its own floaty twist.

Flotsam is a heartfelt, visually delightful city-builder that’s easy to lose time in — just be ready for some rough edges and repetition later on. For fans of cozy sims and ocean exploration it’s worth the trip, especially if you’re patient for patches.

Pros
- Charming art, animations and relaxing soundtrack — very cozy vibes.
- Satisfying scavenging/building loop with meaningful specialist roles and tech.
- Exploration feels rewarding — procedural map with interesting POIs and loot.
Cons
- Mid/late-game pacing gets repetitive and some players crave deeper systems.
- Bugs and QoL issues remain (pathing, freezes, FPS/VSync, limited automation).
Player Opinion
Players praise Flotsam’s art, cozy atmosphere and addictive loop — many sunk dozens of hours. Common criticisms point to bugs, performance drops (especially later in a save), and a lack of endgame depth or automation. If you enjoyed RimWorld/Oxygen Not Included for the systems, you'll appreciate the management side; if you want a chill builder with strong visuals, it's an easy recommendation.
