Restaurats Review — Chaotic Roguelite Cooking with Rat Chefs
Restaurats mixes PlateUp-style co-op kitchen chaos with roguelite cards, wardrobe silliness and a blackjack basement. Hugely fun with friends, but marred by grindy prep, balance issues and a messy controversy around AI art and a political cosmetic.
If you like frying pans, frantic teammates and tiny rats in tiny aprons, Restaurats scratches that itch. Think PlateUp meets Ratatouille with roguelite upgrade cards and a surprisingly deep inventory/prep loop — but expect some rough edges.

You run a rat-run restaurant: prep ingredients, assign chefs and servers, seat picky races and survive wild events. Days begin with a long prep/inventory phase (chopping, precooking, packing) and end in a frantic service where timing, positioning and throwing bread are everything. The roguelite layer shows up as upgrade cards and random rewards between days, plus a Wheel of Fortune for cosmetics — and yes, you can lose your entire run to bad gambling. There’s a surprisingly deep economy: furniture, taxes and station choices matter, which makes expansion meaningful but sometimes punishing. Multiplayer is the sweet spot — voice-changer squeaks and baguette duels are genuine highlights. Controls are intuitive, but the throw/collision feels occasionally clunky and solo players can suffer from long prep times without planned automation. The skill tree and card rewards add variety, though some players call the progression slow or repetitive. Visually it’s charming, customization is a hoot, but there’s controversy around generative-AI assets and an offensive cosmetic that soured some community members. The devs are active with patches and support, which gives hope for balance and QoL fixes.

Restaurats is a lovable, chaotic co-op with real personality — bring friends, patience and a sense of humour. If you play solo or hate grindy prep/economic punishing, wait for QoL and balance patches; if you care about AI art or the political cosmetic, research before buying.

Pros
- Hilarious co-op chaos — best with friends and voice-changer antics.
- Deep prep/inventory loop and tactical choices (seating, stations, taxes).
- Loads of customization, addictive upgrade cards and active developer support.
Cons
- Long, grindy prep times and an economy that can feel punishingly unbalanced.
- Controversy over generative-AI assets and a political cosmetic; some UI bugs and rough polish remain.
Player Opinion
Players love the chaos, customization and the ratty charm — many compare it favorably to PlateUp and Overcooked but with more depth. Common complaints: prep takes too long, taxes/economy feel harsh, and a few mechanics (throwing, skill tree) need tuning. A vocal part of the community is upset about AI-made art and a MAGA-like cosmetic; others praise rapid dev fixes and great support.
