A quirky roguelite about campaigning by day, fighting by night.
I spent many runs on Phew Phew Games' bizarre combo of campaign politics and night-time vigilante action. Anomaly President mixes tight pixel combat, quirky base-building on a campaign bus, and anomaly powers into a surprisingly addictive roguelite.
Anomaly President caught my attention because it dares to mash up two very different loops: being a polished presidential candidate and a chaotic, weapon-wielding rogue. It feels like part metroidvania-roguelite, part political sim with a sensibility that leans into absurdity — in the best way. The pixel art and music give it charm, while the Fluffies and campaign bus add personality I didn’t know I needed. If you enjoyed Anomaly Agent, this is clearly a bolder, more confident follow-up.
By day you’re a candidate shaking hands, organizing rallies and assigning Fluffies to departments. By night you jack into levels as a weaponized vigilante, slicing, shooting or spamming anomaly powers through procedurally populated zones. The loop is satisfying: prep your campaign, pick the right team, then take what you learned into a run where enemy gangs and vice-presidents test your build. Combat leans on timing, weapon variety and anomaly upgrades — sometimes I parried like a maniac, other times I detonated a mass-damage cyber-mage build and laughed maniacally. Runs are varied enough that I rarely felt I was doing the exact same thing twice.
What sets Anomaly President apart is how it mixes systems: you recruit oppressed Fluffies who can campaign, craft or fight; you collect anomaly powers from bosses (the PR chief who controls HEART is delightfully weird); and you design a mobile base on the campaign bus. That bus isn’t a cosmetic trick — its modules change your flow, from crafting stations to cooking that affects your crew. Managing Fluffies becomes strategic: assign the right ones to fundraising or to back you in combat, but neglect them and they’ll leave or worse, die. I admit the micromanagement can feel fiddly — tracking cooking quantities made me pause mid-run — yet the ensemble creates a distinct identity you don’t see in many roguelites.
Graphically, the game leans hard into crisp pixel art and lively animations; enemy designs and boss theatrics are memorable and often hilarious. Sound design and music are consistently strong — several players have said it’s worth buying for the soundtrack alone, and I’m inclined to agree. Performance on Windows is generally smooth, but some players (including myself on a test rig) hit odd resolution and stretching problems on ultra-wide setups; the UI fonts can feel off compared to the art style. Accessibility options are present but could be expanded. Overall, the presentation sells the joke and the stakes at once: it looks and sounds coherent, even when the game’s script gets deliberately silly.
Anomaly President is a delightfully odd roguelite that balances political satire, tight combat and unconventional management systems. It’s not perfect — the bus micromanagement and some technical hiccups hold it back — but the core loop, art and music make it worth trying, especially on Windows. If you like your roguelites with a side of weird humor and modular systems, buy it, follow the updates, and enjoy the revolution.
Players consistently praise the pixel art, soundtrack and the improved combat over the developer’s previous title. Reviews mention the campaign bus and Fluffy systems as welcome additions that add depth and personality. Several players noted the game feels balanced for a roguelite early access, with runs encouraging repeated play. Criticisms are also common: technical issues on ultra-wide monitors and resolution handling, fiddly micromanagement around cooking and crew tasks, and occasional rough dialogue or font choices. If you liked Anomaly Agent or enjoy Metroidvania-leaning roguelites with base-building touches, you’ll probably enjoy this even more. Community sentiment is largely positive and supportive of Phew Phew Games’ continued polish and updates.
