Archon Soul

I jumped into Archon Soul hoping for a fresh take on the dice-roguelike niche, and for the most part PolyGryph delivers. The hook is simple and delicious: instead of drawing cards, you draft spells and then power them by rolling customizable dice whose faces, runes and bodies you craft. If you like the crunchy planning of Slay the Spire and the charm of Dicey Dungeons, this one lands squarely between them — but with its own weird twists and a handful of frustrations that kept me honest.

Rolling Your Fate in the Archon's Halls

Combat in Archon Soul is turn-based and elegantly tactical: you select from a hand of spells and then assign dice to pay their costs. Instead of a mana pool you manage a pool of physical dice that you modify between runs, and that change how you approach every encounter. Early fights feel like careful arithmetic — do I make a die with high faces to guarantee damage or spread values and add runes for utility? Boss fights are where that decision texture shines, since every roll can swing momentum and force you to improvise. The game gives you four starter characters — Gaiamancer, Pyromancer, Thaumancer and a secret fourth — each with distinct spell archetypes, so your dice choices must support your chosen playstyle. Over 200 spells provide a broad toolbox, but in practice I found my favorite combinations and leaned into them, which is both satisfying and a little limiting.

Dicecrafting: The Wild Alchemy

This is the heart of Archon Soul: swapping face values from 1–9, slapping 40 different runes onto faces and choosing from over 30 die bodies produces staggering variety. I had a run where I turned a humble d6 into a debuff machine, another where I built a single huge-damage die that made fights absurdly fast, and a third that relied on synergies between bleed and triggered effects. The rune and body system encourages experimentation — sometimes a tiny rune combo makes a spell feel completely new — and late-game choices reward players who plan ahead. That said, I occasionally hit a wall where a single dominant strategy (I’m looking at you, certain Blackflame builds) outpaced more creative setups, making some spells feel redundant. Still, the modular system is addictive: crafting feels like playing small puzzles between fights, and finding niche synergies is a delight.

Art, Sound, and the Little Rough Edges

Visually, Archon Soul is a treat: illustrated character and enemy art by Anais Lehoux and Natalya Samutina gives the palace a quirky, slightly gothic vibe that I adored. Ofelia Argiro’s soundtrack sets a tense, magical tone that elevates so many encounters. Performance has been solid on Windows, macOS and Linux for me, and the game runs smoothly on Steam Deck though some text can be small on that device. There are UX niggles: drag-and-drop dice feels tactile but can be fiddly in busy fights, and some convenience bindings (like quick-number pick for dice) are missing. Localization has a few rough translations in German that can confuse tooltips, and variety of enemy encounters needs to grow long-term, but the core sensory package is polished and charming.

Archon Soul is a bold, smart riff on dice-roguelikes that nails the core joy of crafting and experimentation. It’s a game I keep coming back to for that satisfying ‘aha’ moment when a dice synergy clicks, even if the meta sometimes funnels you toward a few strong builds. Recommended for fans of strategic roguelikes and anyone curious about deep, modular systems — just be ready for some UX quirks and the possibility that future updates will strengthen variety.
