Megabonk Review – Chaotic 3D Survivors Roguelike with a Bonk
Megabonk turns the Vampire Survivors formula into a loud, 3D bonk-fest: stack tomes, grab weird items, bhop like a maniac and try not to get steamrolled by RNG or the final boss. Addictive, messy and frequently hilarious — but not without frustrating balance issues.
I went in expecting a 3D Vampire Survivors riff and came out with a grin and a few smashed controllers. Megabonk is that messy lovechild of Vampire Survivors, Risk of Rain 2 and Brotato: physics-forward, loud, and absurdly replayable — until the RNG or a boss decides otherwise.

Core loop is gloriously simple: run around maps, kill hordes, pick up XP, and choose upgrades (weapons or tomes) as you level. Maps are vertically playable — jumps, slides and bhopping matter — which gives it a fresh movement feel compared to flat survivors-likes. You unlock 20 characters, 70+ items and 240 quests, plus a variety of chests, microwave mechanics and shrines that change how a run plays out. Progression outside runs is mostly meta-currency for rerolls, bans and extra slots — useful but sometimes feels shallow. Combat is physics-y: hits send enemies flying, things bonk hilariously, and that chaos is a big part of the charm. But RNG is loud here: upgrade offers, item drops and even map seeds can swing a run from glorious to garbage. Bosses are big, nasty and — for many players — the roughest part: final fights can feel unfair without very specific builds. If you like turn-your-brain-off slaughter with movement tech and a memey sense of humor, Megabonk delivers; if you want carefully balanced, skill-first design, you’ll find things to gripe about.

Megabonk is a loud, silly and incredibly replayable riff on survivors-style roguelikes — wildly fun in short bursts but rough around the edges for late-game balance. Buy it if you want chaotic 3D action and don’t mind a heavy dose of RNG; skip it if you want tight, predictable balance.

Pros
- Addictive, fast arcade loop — one more run is real.
- Movement and physics make fights feel explosive and funny.
- Huge unlock pool (characters, quests, items) for completionists.
Cons
- Heavy RNG and some undercooked balance — late tiers can feel punishing.
- Final bosses and some updates cater to leaderboard sweats; casuals get frustrated.
Player Opinion
Players love the brainless, chaotic fun: the movement, soundtrack and the bonk-moments get praised a lot. Common complaints are about RNG, rapid difficulty scaling and bosses that feel unfair without exact item synergies. Many say it scratches the Vampire Survivors/Risk of Rain 2 itch, but others warn it becomes repetitive or grindy once you’ve seen the maps and unlocked the obvious meta items. If you enjoyed Vampire Survivors, Brotato or Risk of Rain 2, there’s a good chance you’ll get a kick out of Megabonk — provided you can stomach the RNG and the sweaty metas.
