ZeroSpace mixes cinematic RPG choices with large-scale RTS battles, a galactic war persistent map and faction variety — promising a modern successor to classic strategy games, rough edges and all.
I jumped into ZeroSpace on release day expecting another ambitious indie RTS and came away impressed, occasionally annoyed, but mostly excited. It’s a hybrid — part Mass Effect-style cinematic choice-driven RPG, part StarCraft-style competitive RTS, all wrapped in a persistent Galactic War layer that actually matters. What sells it to me is how it folds story and personal commanders into large-scale fights without turning heroes into instant win-buttons. If you like your strategy with a dash of soap-opera politics and orbital nukes, this one will grab you by the collar.
The core of ZeroSpace is familiar yet fresh: you play as a commander (like Aster or any of the other selectable leaders) who juggles macro strategies on a persistent Galactic War map and then drops into tactical real-time battles to execute those plans. On the battlefield you issue orders to infantry, artillery, mechs and air units, and the unit responsiveness and pathing are surprisingly tight — you feel in control without being overwhelmed by micro. The economy system is streamlined compared to old-school RTS titans, which lowers the barrier for newcomers but still allows meaningful strategic choices for veterans. Battles swing from tight skirmishes to massive clashes with orbital strikes, nuclear options and mech lines that can break a front in an instant. Multiplayer versus matches are fast and pulse-raising, while co-op on the Galactic War map adds RPG-like progression with planet bonuses and meta-rewards.
What sets ZeroSpace apart is how it layers factions, heroes and special weapons into a single ecosystem without letting any one element dominate. You can pick the Protectorate, Grell, Legion or Xol (plus mercenary auxiliaries) and each faction plays distinct: Grell spread biomass and evolve units, Legion field waves of expendable troops and terror tanks, Xol bring precision robotics and modular tech. Heroes exist, but they supplement armies rather than replace them — think of them as powerful tools in your kit instead of the whole toolbox. Then you add orbital bombardments, mechs, and a surprisingly cinematic campaign with branching dialogues and loyalty missions that ripple into the Galactic War. It’s a lot of moving parts, but most of them actually play nicely together and create memorable moments like clutch mech saves or a timed flux-harvest ambush.
Graphically ZeroSpace is attractive when your settings are tuned; the art direction leans cinematic with faction-specific flair and satisfying visual impact for large battles. The soundtrack and battle sound design do the heavy lifting for atmosphere — music swells when a flank collapses and your heart follows it. Technically the game is Early Access: performance can vary depending on the map and end-game chaos, and the UI still feels like it needs polish in places (menus and nested settings can be frustrating). Developers have been active and community-focused, so many UI and performance fixes are ongoing, but expect occasional rough edges and bug reports if you dive in now. Accessibility and QoL are better than many modern RTS attempts though, and veteran RTS players will appreciate the depth under the streamlined surface.
ZeroSpace is a heartfelt, ambitious RTS that often hits its marks: great combat, memorable factions and a Galactic War that adds real stakes. It’s still an Early Access ride — expect rough edges — but if you enjoy strategic depth, co-op galactic campaigns and fast-paced PvP, it’s worth jumping into on Windows now. Hold off only if you need a perfectly polished single-player-only experience.
Player feedback for ZeroSpace is surprisingly consistent: fans praise the tight combat, the Galactic War’s persistent feel and the accessibility features that ease newcomers into competitive RTS. Many reviewers compare its feel to StarCraft 2 while noting that heroes are supportive rather than game-breaking, which players appreciate. The community also lauds the devs’ responsiveness during Early Access and the steady content updates. Criticisms focus on the polish — UI oddities, some mid- to late-game performance dips on chaotic maps, and an incomplete-feeling campaign for those after a single-player marathon. If you loved SC2’s pace but wanted more meta-progression and co-op, you’ll likely enjoy ZeroSpace; if you demand a completely finished product, some patience is required.
