Shadow of the Tomb Raider drops to $3.99 in Steam's 30th anniversary sale

Lara Croft's 2018 adventure is 90% off on Steam until November 6, part of Crystal Dynamics' sale for the series' 30th anniversary.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition costs $3.99 on Steam right now instead of $39.99, a 90% discount that runs until November 6, 2026. The price cut is part of "30 YEARS of TOMB RAIDER!", a Steam event by Crystal Dynamics that SteamDB lists as running from 23 October to 6 November with 95 products.

An anniversary sale across the series

The occasion is the series' birthday. As Nintendo Life puts it, the original Tomb Raider came out in 1996, 30 years ago, and Steam's sale page advertises a "BIG ANNIVERSARY DISCOUNT!" The other two games of the reboot trilogy are cut by the same amount: Steam's franchise page lists Rise of the Tomb Raider at $2.99 instead of $29.99 and Tomb Raider Game of the Year at $1.99 instead of $19.99.

For anyone who wants all three, Notebookcheck reports that the Tomb Raider: Definitive Survivor Trilogy bundle is also 90% off on Steam until November 6. The bundle normally costs $71.98; Notebookcheck's headline sums up the sale price as "just $7 instead of $70".

Away from Steam, Nintendo Life and Gematsu report that Shadow of the Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition has shadow-dropped on Switch 2. Aspyr brings that version, which includes the seven DLC Challenge Tombs, and according to Nintendo Life it is 10% off on the eShop until 4th November.

How it holds up

On Steam, the 2018 game sits at 84% positive across 89,048 user reviews, rated Very Positive. Critics were cooler: Notebookcheck notes that the PC versions of the first two reboot games both hold a Metascore of 86, while Shadow scores lower on Metacritic. The site names "repetitive combat and a highly linear structure" as common criticisms of the trilogy.

The anniversary also brings a look ahead. Nintendo Life reports that Crystal Dynamics is working on Tomb Raider: Catalyst, a new entry due out in 2028, and Xbox Wire's "Thirty Years of Lara Croft" piece includes the line "We are just getting started."

For players, the sale is the main point: the Definitive Edition costs $3.99 until November 6, and the trilogy bundle covers the earlier games if they are missing from your library. The Steam store lists Mac and Linux versions by Feral Interactive. Anyone sensitive to linear level design should keep in mind the criticism Notebookcheck reports before buying.
