Brotato releases Primal Dread DLC with 10 characters and a new Jungle map

Brotato's Primal Dread DLC is out with a Jungle map, 10 characters and the Evolution stat, plus free update 1.2. The base game is 50% off.

Blobfish released Primal Dread, a new paid DLC for Brotato, on November 2, 2026. In its launch post on Steam, the studio calls it "the biggest addition to the game since the last DLC Abyssal Terrors", which came out over two years ago. A free base-game update, 1.2, went live the same day.

What Primal Dread adds

The DLC brings a new map, the Jungle, with 20 new waves of enemies, elites and bosses. According to the developer's post, packs of dinosaurs charge through the undergrowth in stampedes, and a new environmental hazard, holes, arrives together with flying dinosaurs. On top come 10 new characters, 17 new weapons, 40 new items, new music and achievements that are kept separate from the base game's.

The central new system is the Evolution stat. Players push it toward Mecha or Mutant by picking up item drops on the map. Each path grants different bonuses and changes the enemies with new visuals and attack patterns, while making them stronger. One of the new characters, teased in an October 30 post, is the Poacher, who creates a hunting area and grows much stronger from kills inside it, at the cost of earning less money.

Free update for everyone

Update 1.2, also posted on November 2, adds the Item Set menu for all players. It lets you switch content from DLCs and free updates on or off straight from the character selection screen, for a vanilla run or, for example, a run without pets. The update also nerfs several waves and enemies on Nightmare, a difficulty above Danger 5 that arrived in an earlier free update. The developer admits it moved on to Primal Dread after Nightmare's release without taking "the necessary time" to tune it. Older characters from the base game and Abyssal Terrors get buffs as well.

Primal Dread took longer than first planned. When it was announced in April, Gematsu reported a summer launch; a later developer post moved it to the end of 2026. The DLC's store page lists Blobfish Games and Evil Empire as developers. Brotato itself fully released on June 23, 2023.

On Steam's most played chart, Brotato stood at rank 93 on November 2 with a peak of 17,222 concurrent players, 28 places higher than a week earlier. On November 3 at 11:41 UTC, 22,636 people were playing, rank 60 by current players. The game holds 120,480 user reviews, 95 percent of them positive, rated Overwhelmingly Positive.

For newcomers the timing is cheap: the base game is 50 percent off at $2.49 instead of $4.99. The developer set the DLC's price at $3.99, and at launch Steam's bundle page listed it at $3.19, 20 percent off, with Brotato, Abyssal Terrors and Primal Dread together at $8.70 instead of $12.97. Returning players should deactivate all mods first, since the studio warns that outdated mods can cause conflicts. Console and mobile players have to wait: Gematsu reports that the DLC comes to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, Switch 2 and other platforms in early 2027. The developer says it plans further changes based on feedback now that the DLC is out.
